Paige, an AI-powered pathology solutions provider, has announced the open-source release of its AI models, Virchow and PRISM. Available on Hugging Face, these models are designed to aid researchers, diagnosticians, and developers in cancer research.

Virchow, developed in collaboration with Microsoft Research, is the first million-slide foundation model for cancer. It utilizes a dataset of 1.5 million digitized pathology slides from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, offering insights into cancer diagnosis and management practices.

PRISM builds on Virchow’s framework by combining vision and language models to provide slide-level cancer insights. Trained with an additional 587,000 whole slide images and 195,000 clinical reports, PRISM generates diagnostic summaries. These summaries assist in standard diagnostic tasks such as cancer detection and subtyping, and aim to improve efficiency by reducing the need for extensive training data.

Paige’s decision to open-source these models under various licenses is intended to promote collaboration and innovation within the research community. Virchow is available under the Apache 2.0 License, while PRISM and the Paige ML SDK are accessible under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 License.

Siqi Liu, Director of AI Science at Paige, commented:

“Our goal is to support progress in AI research by making our models accessible... The release of OpenPFM, featuring Virchow and PRISM, is part of our efforts to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment.”

For those interested in more advanced versions or commercial licensing, Paige provides solutions to support clinical trials, research and development, and other commercial applications. The company also offers collaboration opportunities with its team of AI scientists and medical experts to support scientific discoveries.

Paige uses AI technology to enhance cancer discovery and treatment, aiming to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency worldwide. As the first company to receive FDA approval for a clinical AI application in digital pathology, Paige continues to integrate AI with medical research and clinical applications.
